Thoai Son district was re-established in 1979, according to Decision 300-CP, dated August 23, 1979 of the Government Council on adjusting the boundaries of some districts and towns, belonging to An Giang province. Right from the early days of re-establishment, Thoai Son was still a poor, deprived, and difficult-to-travel rural area.
However, with the determination of the entire political system, the joint efforts and consensus of the people in the district, the Party Committee, government and people of Thoai Son district have creatively applied the Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, found their own direction, with effective solutions and methods, notably boldly shifting rice production from 1 crop to 2 crops, then 3 crops, building rural socio-economic infrastructure, implementing many social security models with positive results.

With outstanding achievements, in 2000, the Party Committee and People of Thoai Son were honored by the State with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces during the resistance war against the US to save the country; in 2009, the Party Committee and People of Thoai Son continued to be honored by the State with the title of Hero of Labor during the renovation period.

From the foundation of a district meeting new rural standards, recognized by the Prime Minister in 2018, with 14/14 communes meeting new rural standards, under the resources of the Central, the province and the locality, Thoai Son district has united, strived, applied many good models, creative and effective methods and especially the support and consensus of the people in implementing the set of criteria and indicators for new rural areas and advanced new rural areas.

Up to now, Thoai Son district has achieved 9/9 criteria of an advanced new rural district. Among them are many outstanding results such as: Regarding traffic construction, 11 new routes to the commune center were expanded from 3.5 meters to 7.5 meters, with a length of 43 km; 31 inter-commune and inter-hamlet roads were asphalted, with 118 km and reaching 100% of the routes. The total number of routes with lighting systems is 98 routes and the length obtains 401 km/401 km, reaching 100%. The average income per capita in the district's rural areas reached 73.5 million VND/person/year and the average production value per hectares of agricultural land reached 215 million VND/ha, the poverty rate has decreased gradually every year, to date it is 1.17%. Regarding social culture, the whole district has 23 Scholarship and Talent Promotion Funds with mobilized funds of more than 23 billion VND; The district has 54 schools that meet national standards at level 1 or higher, accounting for 80.5%, compared to the average of the province of 55%, compared to 2018, an increase of 39 schools and 58.2%; People's health care is guaranteed; The whole district has 31 social charity funds, with mobilized funds of 57,190 million VND; the district's charity home model with 18 mobilized funds of 135,764 million VND to build charity houses and more than 2,650 charity houses were built for poor households and those with housing difficulties in the district;...

With the results and achievements, on August 01, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 750/QD-TTg recognizing Thoai Son district, An Giang province as an advanced new rural district in 2023. Thoai Son is proud to be one of the first districts in the Mekong Delta to be recognized as an advanced new rural district, achieving the target earlier than the Resolution of the 11th An Giang Provincial Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Van Phuoc praised and acknowledged the achievements of the Party Committee, Government and People of Thoai Son district. At the same time, he requested the Party Committee, Government and People of Thoai Son district to continue to be determined in leadership and direction; promote the role of leaders of Party committees, authorities and unions in organizing and implementing socio-economic development plans, building new rural areas in the locality; aiming to build new rural communes to meet the standards of model new rural communes in the coming time.

In particular, focusing on overcoming limitations and difficulties; effectively exploiting the potential and strengths of the locality; identifying breakthrough tasks, appropriate and flexible implementation roadmaps and maximizing all resources to continue promoting the implementation of the National Target Program on New Rural Development, with the viewpoint that "New rural development has a starting point, but no ending point".

Mobilizing resources to build synchronous and modern socio-economic infrastructure associated with urban development, improving the material and spiritual life of people, especially people in rural areas. Paying attention to sustainable development and protecting the agricultural and rural environment in a clean, green and sustainable direction associated with tourism development.

Paying more attention to training and developing human resources, especially high-quality human resources to serve the development of industry, tourism services and agriculture; enhance the application of high science and technology in agricultural production; promote administrative reform, improve the investment and business environment, create all favorable conditions for businesses and investors to come to Thoai Son for investment and development.

The Party Committee, government and people of Thoai Son district need to constantly promote the heroic revolutionary tradition, uphold the spirit of solidarity, unity, determination, dynamism and creativity, build a strong Party Committee and government, create the strong belief of cadres - party members and people in the leadership of the Party Committee and the management of the local government, in order to mobilize the combined strength to build and develop Thoai Son to become more civilized and prosperous.

At the announcement ceremony, the Executive Board of An Giang Provincial Party Committee awarded a Certificate of Merit to Thoai Son District Party Committee for its outstanding achievements in building the district to meet advanced new rural standards in 2023; An Giang Provincial People's Committee awarded an Emulation Flag to the Party Committee, government and people of Thoai Son District for their outstanding achievements in the emulation movement "An Giang joins hands to build new rural areas" for the period 2021 - 2025. The Provincial and District People's Committees awarded certificates of merit to collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in building Thoai Son District to meet advanced new rural standards in 2023.

On this occasion, Thoai Son district received the Vietnam Record, with the content "The district has built and mobilized the most socialized funds to serve social security and poverty reduction, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of the people in the area (from 2003 to present with 31 funds).
