(AG Provincial E-Portal) - On February 12, Ho Van Mung, Alternate Member of the Central Party Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee, chaired a meeting to hear the report from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment regarding the current situation and proposed solutions for waste management in the province. The meeting was attended by Mr. Le Van Phuoc and Mr. Ngo Cong Thuc, Vice Chairmen of the People's Committee of An Giang Province, as well as leaders from relevant departments, localities, and the An Giang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company.
The province generates approximately 1,220 tons of waste daily (680 tons from urban areas and 540 tons from rural areas). The total amount of waste collected is about 938.52 tons per day, representing 76.93% of the total waste generated. There are two waste collection units in the province, namely the An Giang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company and the Green Environmental Construction Company, which transport waste to seven waste treatment clusters. However, around 281.48 tons of waste daily, particularly in remote rural areas and islands, is either handled by households (through burial or burning) or discarded directly into the environment. Additionally, there are 24 closed waste disposal sites with a total of approximately 153,744 tons of waste still under local management.
In his concluding remarks, Chairman Ho Van Mung emphasized the urgent need to address waste management issues in areas facing critical challenges, such as Cho Moi, Phu Tan, and Tri Ton districts. Regarding future investments in waste management, particularly landfill projects, responsible agencies should coordinate to approve investment decisions and feasibility studies by the first quarter of 2025.
The Chairman also called on the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to advise the Provincial People's Committee in issuing directives to guide waste sorting and impose penalties for non-compliance, particularly in government agencies, schools, and healthcare facilities. Local authorities should devise detailed plans for closing landfills. The Provincial People's Committee tasked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to collaborate with relevant units to expedite the development of a waste management plan and the closure of waste disposal sites.
Regarding the planning of waste treatment plants, the province must ensure waste collection for all areas, consider long-term direction, and adopt modern technologies for waste treatment, recycling, and composting organic waste./.
