(AG Provincial E-Portal) - On the evening of November 27th, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang held a ceremony to announce the Decision of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to list the palm sugar craft of the Khmer ethnic minority in Tri Ton district and Tinh Bien town, An Giang province, as a national intangible cultural heritage.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman of Tinh Bien Town People's Committee, affirmed that the palm tree is a precious product, a typical cultural product of the Bay Nui - An Giang region. With its typical values, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has advised the Provincial People's Committee to compile a scientific dossier "Palm sugar craft of Khmer people in An Giang province" to submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for consideration and recognition to be included in the List of national intangible cultural heritage.
After the National Heritage Council reviewed and unanimously approved, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision 376/QĐ-BVHTTDL on announcing the inclusion of the Palm Sugar Craft of the Khmer people in An Giang Province in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This is the pride of the Khmer people in Tinh Bien town and Tri Ton district, and is a premise for the Khmer authorities and community to raise awareness in the work of preserving and promoting the value of national cultural heritage.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Truong Ba Trang, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang, congratulated the local government, palm sugar artisans, and Khmer people in Tinh Bien town, Tri Ton district. At the same time, he affirmed that the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will work with Tinh Bien town and Tri Ton district to develop a plan to preserve and promote the value of the Khmer palm sugar craft in the period of 2025 - 2030.
Before the palm sugar craft of the Khmer ethnic minority was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, An Giang had 7 recognized heritages, including: The Ba Chua Xu (Lady Xu) Festival of Sam Mountain; The Bay Nui Bull Racing Festival; The knowledge and techniques of writing on palm leaves of the Khmer ethnic group; The Ky Yen Festival at Thoai Ngoc Hau Temple (Thoai Son district); The Lifespan Ritual of the Cham Islam people in Tan Chau town and An Phu district; The brocade weaving craft of the Cham people in Chau Phong commune (Tan Chau town); The Di Ke stage performance art of the Khmer people in O Lam commune (Tri Ton district).
