Marine Economy Workshop – developing An Giang into a National Marine Economic Hub

(AG Provincial E-Portal) - On the morning of January 30, the People’s Committee of An Giang Province, in coordination with Can Tho University, held the Marine Economy Workshop – Developing An Giang into a National Marine Economic Hub. Representatives of provincial departments and agencies, localities, scientists, experts, and businesses attended the workshop.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang Province Le Huu Toan suggests discussion topics at the workshop

Speaking at the workshop, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Huu Toan stated that marine economic development has been identified as a breakthrough in An Giang’s economic development tasks, aligning harmoniously with the Sustainable Development Strategy, the Green Growth Strategy, the National Climate Change Strategy, and the province’s key programs for the 2025–2030 period with a vision to 2050.

By 2030, An Giang will become one of Viet Nam’s marine economic centers, serving as a key hub for trade, logistics services, tourism, energy, high-tech aquaculture, and seafood processing in the Southwest sea region; closely linked with the Long Xuyen Quadrangle sub-region, neighboring provinces, and the Cambodia border; forming a modern, green, smart coastal–island urban chain deeply integrated with the regional economy of the Gulf of Thailand; and developing the marine economy in tandem with environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and firmly ensuring national defense and security in sea and island areas.

To realize the goal of making An Giang a province strong from the sea and prosperous from the sea, the provincial People’s Committee directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to coordinate with Can Tho University in drafting the Project on Developing An Giang into a National Marine Economic Hub. To date, the draft project has been completed. The draft assesses the province’s potential and strengths, as well as difficulties and limitations in past marine economic development, and on that basis sets out orientations, tasks, and solutions for the period ahead.

Vice Chairman of the An Giang Fisheries Association Quang Trong Thao comments on the draft project

At the workshop, delegates focused on discussing the contents of the draft project, offering numerous in-depth opinions on perspectives, orientations, objectives, and pillars of marine economic development; special mechanisms and policies to develop marine sectors in a sustainable, smart, and modern direction; solutions to support regional linkages; attracting investment in transport infrastructure and seaports; protecting ecosystems and the marine–island environment; and ensuring long-term livelihoods for coastal and island communities;…

According to a representative of the Department of Construction, to realize the goal of making the marine economy a development pillar, transport infrastructure and seaports must take the lead. In the coming period, the province will continue to prioritize public investment capital for key transport and seaport projects in the province; and promote mobilization of non-public investment resources through public-private partnership (PPP) models in developing the seaport system, logistics, and port-city urban infrastructure…;

Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism Nguyen Viet Thong noted that, under the province’s economic development strategy, Phu Quoc special zone will be a nationally and internationally scaled eco-tourism and sea–island resort hub, which requires sufficiently strong special policies for coordination, resource mobilization, shortening procedures, raising standards for environmental and social governance, and strengthening essential public service capacity…

Delivering the closing remarks, Director Le Huu Toan acknowledged and received the presentations and discussion inputs from delegates to finalize the draft project and submit it for approval according to the set timeline./.
